Depressed? Make it a ‘Mummy day’…

Some advice about how to handle depression from a young mum named Meg, posted on this UK* blog:

Sometimes life can be just a bit s**t. You're down, you struggle to get out of bed, your baby is crying, your husband/boyfriend/partner is out or not interested, all you want to do is pull the duvet over your head and cry. Block out the world. Some days the curtains are staying firmly closed. This is OK, it's fine to feel rubbish, it's fine to give in every now and then and to hide from the world, if you don't then the good days are harder to appreciate. But while you're hiding, dedicate the time to your baby. Don't make it a sad-not-going-out-cos-the-world-is-crap day, make it a play day, a duvet day, even a Disney day. Make it a Mummy day. Because whatever is going on in our heads, whatever is going on in our lives, we are Mummies first and foremost.

"There is neither good nor ill but thinking makes it so" -Hamlet.

Shakespeare has a point, anything can be good or bad, it just depends on your thoughts. A bruised leg for instance, a pain in the (literal) leg, or a lesson to watch out for stealth toys in the future? An ex ignoring you in the street, a sign of rejection, or a sign he was too intimidated to say hello? A teething baby, a whingy, moany now or a new step in their tiny lives? Positive thinking is hard, nay, impossible in some situations - particularly on those dark days. But one shiny thought at a time can change your perspective. Positive thinking could literally change your world.'

We know (first-hand) that post-partum depression is difficult to manage on your own. Luckily you're not alone! Check out some resources for post-partum depression here.

...and, whats with the picture? It is a painting by Frida Kahlo, who also struggled with depression.
